Travellers planning to catch flights from the UK to New Zealand could see the benefit of a new codeshare agreement between two major carriers.

Virgin Atlantic and Air New Zealand have reached a deal that is set to provide 'more flexibility and choice' on routes between the countries.

One of the main benefits for Virgin Atlantic passengers will be the option to book connecting journeys on a range of routes, including services from Sydney to Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington and from Auckland to Christchurch, Wellington, Queenstown and Rarotonga.

Air New Zealand's NZ code will be placed on the UK carrier's flights from London Heathrow to San Francisco and from Hong Kong to Sydney.

Steve Ridgway, chief executive of Virgin Atlantic, pointed out that both airlines boast award-winning business class and premium economy products and 'complement each other perfectly'.

Rob Fyfe, chief executive of Air New Zealand, added: 'This new codeshare agreement provides yet further connectivity options for our customers as well as providing important connectivity for Virgin Atlantic customers to New Zealand and also the Cook Islands.'
