Hawaii visitors treated to natural spectacle

Travellers looking forward to a break in Hawaii over the next few months will have the opportunity to enjoy one of the state's most impressive natural spectacles.

North Pacific humpback whales visit the warm waters of Hawaii every year to breed and give birth.

Between 6,000 and 8,000 whales make the migration and are visible in the area until the beginning of April.

Visitors can sign up for guided tours on land and at sea allowing them to get a good view of the impressive mammals, although regulations prevent boats from getting within 100 yards of the animals.

According to Hawaii Tourism Europe, one of the best places to spot whales is the Auau channel between the islands of Maui, Molokai and Lanai.

Lahaina harbour in Maui offers a number of whale-watching tours on charter boats and passenger rafts which range in duration from two to four hours.

Other popular activities on offer in Hawaii include hiking, snorkelling and scuba diving.
