Flights from Doncaster Sheffield airport proved a popular option last year, with more travellers beginning their journeys from the base.

More than 895,100 people used the South Yorkshire airport in 2010, marking an increase of 5% on the 851,300 passengers recorded the previous year.

Several factors contributed to the growth, including a 3% year-on-year increase in passenger numbers for Flybe, which operates flights to Belfast City and Jersey from Doncaster.

Commenting on the traffic figures, airport director Mike Morton said: 'This is fantastic news, especially given the difficulties we faced in the travel industry in 2010.

'The severe weather conditions at the beginning and end of the year and the volcanic ash cloud from Iceland had a major impact on travel in and out of the UK. Despite this, we saw more passengers taking off and landing in Doncaster.'

Mr Morton highlighted the importance of easyJet's operations at the base, describing the carrier's eight-month presence as a 'big boost'.
