Travellers visiting the city of Fort Lauderdale in Florida during trips to the US this year will be able to join in with the destination's 100th birthday celebrations.

The centennial festivities began with the installation of a large, illuminated '100' sign on the beachfront.

Local authorities also commissioned pop artist Charles Fazzino to create Ten Decades of Fort Lauderdale, a 3D painting rendered in a bright, energetic style that depicts the past, present and possible future of the city.

Holidaymakers visiting the destination this year can attend some of the special celebratory events that will be taking place, including a St Patrick's Day parade and outdoor festival on 12 March.

The city's 100th birthday will fall on 27 March and will be marked by a concert by Tropical Sinfonia and the Centennial Riverfest, which will feature a range of special activities, exhibitions and entertainment in downtown Fort Lauderdale.

People catching flights to the city will also be able to see giant 'then and now' video montages projected on the side of buildings depicting different locations as they appeared over the past 100 years.
