Organisers of the Cape Town Jazz Festival have announced that the event will host a performance by a genuine music legend this year.

Wayne Shorter, the American saxophonist and composer who was part of Miles Davis' second great quintet in the 1960s and co-led the jazz fusion band Weather Report in the 70s, will visit the South African city for this year's festival on 25 and 26 March.

Festival director Rashid Lombard said that the organisers of the programme were "thrilled" to have finally achieved their ambition of getting Shorter to perform in Cape Town.

The artist will play with a quartet comprising pianist Danilo Perez, bassist John Patitucci and drummer Brian Blade.

Cape Town's International Convention Centre will provide the venue for this year's festival, which will also feature headline performances by American band Earth, Wind and Fire and saxophonist Dave Koz.

The rest of the programme will be divided evenly between African artists and performers from the rest of the world, with Youssou N'Dour and Simphiwe Dana set to lead this year's African contingent.
