Lisbon museum launches exhibition of Oriental art
27 Jan 2011

The Orient Museum in Lisbon has launched a new exhibition showcasing 'Namban art' - a description that covers artworks created in China and Japan in the 16th and 17th centuries as a result of the arrival of European sailors in the Far East.

People planning city breaks in Portugal's capital city will be able to see the display, which is titled Namban Commissions: The Portuguese in Modern-Age Japan, until 31 May this year.

The show brings together a rare collection of more than 60 pieces of furniture, textiles, weapons and paintings.

Visitors can also see intricately illustrated screens and military masks taken from various collections.

The exhibition is divided into four sections, which explore themes including the political instability in Japan in the mid-16th century and the actions of Christian missionaries in the region.

Among the items associated with the latter topic are a range of military objects that once belonged to Japanese lords who had converted to Christianity.

People interested in seeing the Orient Museum's new show can catch flights to Lisbon with easyJet, TAP Portugal, British Airways and other carriers.
