3 Feb 2011
Travellers planning a trip to Sydney in Australia have been encouraged to visit the city's beaches, which have been described as 'spectacular' by Tourism New South Wales.
The city is a 'swim and surf mecca', according to the tourism organisation, with more than 70 beaches and other locations offering easy access to the sea.
Bondi was voted one of the top ten beaches in the world in a recent survey by National Geographic.
It is one of a number of 'urban beach villages' in Sydney that are home to a range of bars, cafes, shops and dining establishments.
Bruce Hopkins, chief rescue lifeguard at Bondi Beach, said that the destination's 'beautiful water and pristine sand' draws visitors from all over the world to see one of Sydney's 'true gems'.
Justine Cooper, director of marketing and communications for Tourism New South Wales, said: 'Sydney's spectacular beaches, which are located just minutes from the city centre, are a huge draw for visitors along with the beautiful harbour and icons such as Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge.'
