3 Feb 2011

Travellers spent more money on trips in the US during the third quarter of 2010, the country's government commerce department has revealed.

Spending on travel and tourism increased at an annual rate of 8% during the period - the largest quarterly rise since the beginning of 2004.

Growth was recorded in the air transport, lodging and restaurant sectors, with travellers spending 29.8% more on flights in the third quarter of 2010 to take advantage of lower fares.

Some 9.5% more was spent on hotels and other traveller accommodations, marking the third consecutive quarter of growth.

Francisco Sanchez, undersecretary of commerce for international trade, said: 'The travel and tourism industry experienced remarkable growth last year.

'This is excellent news for our small and medium-sized businesses, which account for more than 80% of the travel and tourism industry.'

International travellers interested in exploring America can begin their trip by catching flights to cities such as New York, Chicago, Boston and San Francisco.
