NYC & Company is encouraging travellers to visit Harlem in the New York borough of Manhattan during trips to the city this year.

The tourism marketing organisation is promoting the area as part of Black History Month.

Destination: Harlem was launched to coincide with the opening of Aloft Harlem, the first new hotel to be introduced in the neighbourhood since 1967, which is located close to a number of popular attractions.

The campaign will run until 28 February and will highlight a number of special events at cultural institutions, as well as itineraries taking in dining, culture and nightlife venues.

George Fertitta, chief executive of NYC & Company, said: 'As the epicentre of African-American culture for more than a century, Harlem is a historic and dynamic destination.

'Destination: Harlem showcases some of the best culture, restaurants and entertainment in New York City and now visitors have the opportunity to stay in Harlem and experience more of what this iconic neighborhood has to offer.'

Among the highlights of the events taking place this month is The Apollo Legacy: Jazz! at the Museum of the City of New York on 28 February, which will pay tribute to the likes of Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday.
