Cape Town Routes Unlimited (CTRU), the destination marketing organisation for the South African city and the Western Cape region, has underlined its commitment to responsible tourism.

Following Responsible Tourism Week, which ran from 14 to 18 February, CTRU highlighted the importance of international travellers adopting a conscientious approach during their trips.

Chief executive Calvyn Gilfellan said that using responsible practices as a way of responding to issues such as global warming and environmental degradation is at the heart of the organisation's marketing strategy.

He added: 'We're also very proud of Cape Town's global recognition as the best destination in the 2009 Responsible Tourism Awards.'

Alan Winde, the Western Cape's minister of finance, economic development and tourism, said the local government encourages initiatives such as Responsible Tourism Week.

'We also ask the public to make discerning and responsible choices when they travel and pick their holiday spots and activities,' he added.

Cape Town is famous for landmarks and attractions such as Table Mountain, Robben Island and the Victoria and Alfred waterfront area.
