Boston offers a diverse selection of attractions and experiences that makes it highly popular among all sorts of visitors, according to a tourism spokesman.

Larry Meehan, vice-president of tourism for the Greater Boston Convention and Visitors Bureau, described the destination as 'vibrant [and] friendly', with a range of hotels, restaurants and other visitor amenities to choose from.

'We're family-friendly, gay-friendly, Hollywood loves Boston for filming, and it's easy to get to Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket, the Maine Coast, the White and Green Mountains,' he added.

'You can see why we enjoy lots of repeat visitors from the UK.'

Highlights for holidaymakers to look out for include the waterfront area and Harvard University, which is 'famous all over again' for being the birthplace of Facebook, according to Mr Meehan.

From June this year, visitors will be able to use a fast ferry service to Cape Cod that will complete the journey from Boston in 90 minutes.

Delta Airlines recently announced that it would be launching new flights to Boston from London Heathrow in March this year.
