New campaign calls for fair tax on flights
3 Mar 2011
Abta - The Travel Association is spearheading a new campaign calling for the government to introduce a fairer tax on flights to and from the UK.
The tourism industry is coming together to pursue the initiative, which urges the authorities to halt any further rises in air passenger duty (APD).
According to Abta, APD has increased by 2600% since it was introduced in 1994 and will generate some £2.2bn in tax revenue from holidaymakers and business travellers this year.
In a new survey conducted by ComRes for the travel industry association, almost two-thirds (63%) of consumers said they think the current level of taxation on air travel is too high.
An open letter has been sent to George Osborne, the chancellor of the exchequer, on behalf of the campaign, setting out five fairness tests for him to take into account as he prepares his next Budget.
A Facebook page has also been set up to allow the public to show their support for the Fair Tax on Flying initiative.
Companies supporting the campaign include British Airways, whose chief executive Keith Williams said: 'We recognise the exceptional difficulty of the country's fiscal position and we are content to pay our fair share.
'But the UK airline industry is already the most heavily taxed in the world and any further tax burden will be counterproductive to the country's economic recovery.'
