2010 'an excellent year' for Cape Town tourism
7 Mar 2011
Tourism Cape Town has announced that 2010 was 'an excellent year' for the South African city and the Western Cape region.
Speaking in Durban, Calvyn Gilfellan, chief executive of Cape Town Routes Unlimited, revealed that international tourist arrivals in South Africa grew by 15% last year.
He said the industry's performance showed that the Western Cape is 'a truly world-class destination', with more than 80% of first-time visitors saying they wanted to return in future.
The figures were also welcomed by regional finance and tourism minister Alan Winde, who pointed out that the Fifa World Cup had a significant effect on the results.
He added: 'In the Western Cape we went all out in 2010 to ensure that tourists visiting our shores would return with their family and friends.
'The message for Cape Town and the Western Cape being a value for money destination with top-class infrastructure and friendly service was communicated successfully to tourists.'
A marketing strategy is being launched this year to ensure that the region capitalises on the profile boost provided by the World Cup.
