8 Mar 2011
Travellers planning a cultural break this year should have no trouble finding things to do if they decide to visit Glasgow, according to a new report.
The study was commissioned by the local council and Glasgow Life and carried out by cultural policy analyst John Myerscough, who found that city's creative, entertainment and arts scenes have gone from strength to strength over the past 21 years.
According to the findings, Glasgow's cultural sector workforce now consists of some 5,362 people and the city has the greatest concentration of creative industries in Scotland.
Museums attract approximately 3.57m visitors per year, with hundreds of thousands more heading to heritage sites such as Glasgow Cathedral and buildings designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
Other experiences on offer to tourists include the 3,456 live performances that are staged during the average year and theatre productions that are enjoyed by about 1m people.
Gordon Matheson, council leader and chair of the Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, said: 'Glasgow is Scotland's cultural metropolis, a creative powerhouse which boosts not only the city's standing both at home and abroad, but is a key provider of jobs across the city.
'Since long before 1990, the city prioritised our heritage, art and culture as a way of transforming our fortunes. This landmark report proves that our investment has worked.'
