Travellers planning a trip to New Zealand have been reassured that the country is 'open and welcoming visitors', despite the recent earthquake in Christchurch.

As well as assuring visitors that the majority of the country is open to guests as normal, Tourism New Zealand chief executive Kevin Bowler thanked the UK travel sector for the kindness it has shown following the disaster, which was localised to Christchurch and Lyttelton.

Mr Bowler said the organisation has been 'overwhelmed' by the support that the country has received from the UK and thanked people who have been involved in relief efforts.

'From a tourism industry perspective, other than Christchurch city, New Zealand is very much open as normal,' he added.

'Our tourism businesses across the country, and especially in the wider Canterbury area, have been making alternative arrangements for those who had planned to stay in Christchurch and will continue to do [so] over the coming months.'

Mr Bowler expressed the national tourism organisation's confidence that travellers will continue to enjoy the experiences on offer in New Zealand, such as 'tramping in Abel Tasman National Park, sailing in Auckland harbour or relaxing over a glass of world-class wine'.
