New York museum to launch South African art show
17 Mar 2011
New York's Museum of Modern Art will present a new exhibition this month exploring art created in South Africa since 1965.
Travellers planning a trip to the city will be able to see the display from 23 March to 14 August.
One of the main themes of the show is how artists based in South Africa during the apartheid era used their work to express themselves freely and underline the need for political change despite the oppressiveness of the regime.
Printmaking became a popular art form during this time, owing to its flexibility, portability and relative affordability.
Entirely drawn from the Museum of Modern Art's collection, the new exhibition will highlight the importance of printmaking during a time of political upheaval through a presentation of nearly 100 posters, books, wall stencils and other works.
Also showing at the museum this year is a display highlighting Pablo Picasso's period of diverse creativity in the years preceding World War I.
