Glasgow to get new attraction in June
23 Mar 2011
The Glasgow City Marketing Bureau has started the countdown to the opening of the Riverside Museum, which is due to begin welcoming guests from 21 June this year.
Designed by renowned architect Zaha Hadid, the £74m complex will provide a new home for the Scottish city's transport and technology collections.
About 150 displays will be presented at the site, featuring approximately 3,000 exhibits that were previously housed at the Museum of Transport, which welcomed nearly 500,000 visitors every year before it closed in April 2010.
The attraction is the first major museum to be built in Glasgow since the Burrell Collection in 1983.
It will open on the same day as the tall ship Glenlee, which will be berthed alongside the new building.
City council leader Gordon Matheson said the Riverside Museum will strengthen Glasgow's position as Scotland's 'cultural powerhouse'.
'Zaha Hadid's breathtaking design has already been transformed into an iconic building that will bring visitors to the city from all over the world,' he added.
'That vision and ambition is being matched inside the building and we are counting down the days until the museum opens to the public.'
