Visitors to San Francisco enjoy taking in the atmosphere and ambience of the city, according to the local tourism agency.

Publishing the results of a year-long study, the San Francisco Travel Association revealed that the experiences on offer in the destination ensured that it remained a popular leisure hotspot in 2010.

Some 15.92m people visited the city during the year, 3.1% more than in 2009, with an average of 126,931 tourists arriving every day.

Spending increased by 6.2% year-on-year to reach $8.34bn (£5.16bn).

The survey also revealed that the majority (60.7%) of people visiting San Francisco in 2010 stayed in one of the city's hotels, motels, inns or hostels, while 14.2% came to see friends or relatives.

Commenting on the research, Joe D'Alessandro, president and chief executive of the San Francisco Travel Association, said: 'The results show that, not surprisingly, San Francisco remains a strong leisure travel destination, drawing visitors from as nearby as the Bay Area and as far away as the UK, Germany and Australia.

'While they visit the traditional pockets of Union Square and Fisherman's Wharf, they also venture into other neighbourhoods, such as SOMA and the Castro. They are most awed by the city's ambience and atmosphere.'

Special events set to attract travellers to the destination this year include the Dine About Town restaurant promotion, which will run from 1 to 15 June.
