Work by Anthony Caro, one of the most influential British sculptors of his generation, will be showcased at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York this year.

Some of the artist's creations will be presented in an installation in the Iris and B Gerald Cantor Roof Garden from 26 April to 30 October.

Travellers visiting the museum during breaks in New York can head to the roof to see a selection of steel, painted and unpainted sculptures by Caro and also admire views of Central Park and the city's famous skyline.

The exhibition has been arranged to mark the 50th anniversary of the artist's first exhibition of steel artworks.

Gary Tinterow, Engelhard chairman of the Metropolitan Museum's 19th century, modern and contemporary art department, said Caro is one of the leading figures in a generation that has produced 'singularly great, monumental sculpture'.

He added: 'The first two installations of the Roof Garden in 1987 and 1988 featured his work, and it is a real pleasure to welcome him back.

'The elegance and wit of the unexpected, delicately coloured forms will look marvellous silhouetted against the undulating green carpet of Central Park.'
