Paris market opens for public tours

Paris market opens for public tours
13 Apr 2011

People planning trips to Paris this year will have the chance to visit the world's largest fresh produce market.

The 232-hectare tradesmen's market at Rungis is opening to the public for the first time in its history, with guided tours taking place on the second Friday of every month.

More than 26,000 vehicles deliver fish, meat, fruit and vegetables to the site on a daily basis.

The market is responsible for providing over half of the fresh seafood consumed in Paris, as well as 45% of the French capital's fruit and vegetables, 35% of its meat and half of all the flowers decorating homes and businesses in the city.

After spending more than 800 years in Les Halles Centrales in the centre of Paris, the market moved 10km south to its current site at Rungis in the 1960s.

Visitors interested in taking part in one of the tours will have to be prepared for an early start, as the pick-up from the city centre is at 05:00 local time.

The excursions end at 08:30 with a traditional market breakfast.
