There will be some unforgettable experiences on offer to culture vultures visiting Italy this summer, with the Verona Opera Festival set to return for its 89th year.

The prestigious event will come to the Arena di Verona from 17 June to 3 September, with six different works being performed on 49 nights.

Visitors will be able to see the festival open with a new production of Verdi's La Traviata directed by Hugo de Ana and conducted by Carlo Rizzi, which will be staged on 17 and 24 June and on various dates in July and August.

Set designers Avshalom Pollak and Inbal Pinto have contributed to a new take on Romeo et Juliette by Charles Gounod, which will be performed on 20, 24 and 27 August.

Verdi operas will be at the heart of this year's festival programme, with Aida and Nabucco also set to entertain guests at the Arena di Verona, along with productions of Rossini's The Barber of Seville and Puccini's La Boheme.
