Alaska events to celebrate national forests
19 Apr 2011
Travellers visiting Alaska this year will be able to join in with a series of events and festivals paying tribute to the state's forests.
The region will be taking part in International Year of the Forests, a year-long initiative organised by the United Nations General Assembly to promote conservation of wilderness areas across the globe.
Alaska is home to America's two largest national forests - the Chugach and the Tongass - which together cover more than 22m acres.
Visitors can take tours to see the wildlife found in the area or try activities including hiking, fishing, rafting and skiing.
Events to look out for over the coming months include the Yakutat Tern Festival at the beginning of June, which will include art exhibitions, birdwatching field trips and activities for children.
The state's celebrations of its forests will also include National Get Outdoors Day on 11 June and the Copper River Wild Salmon Festival in Cordova (27-30 July).
