'Major milestone' for New Orleans tourism industry

'Major milestone' for New Orleans tourism industry
20 Apr 2011

The New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau has announced that 2010 marked a 'major milestone' for the US city, with tourist numbers reaching 8.3m.

Overall visitation was 10.7% higher than in 2009, crossing the 8m mark for the first time since Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

A study conducted by the University of New Orleans also revealed that tourists spent $5.3bn (£3.2bn) in the city in 2010, $1.1bn more than the previous year and the highest level in the destination's history.

The majority (78%) of visitors were travelling for leisure purposes and spent an average of $569 per trip.

Stephen Perry, president and chief executive of the New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau, described the statistics as 'energising' in light of recent events and challenges to industry growth.

He added: 'Coming out of the strong economic downturn, and on top of the difficult perception challenges created by the BP oil spill, the city hosted multiple attendance record-breaking conventions, festivals, had strong leisure and transient results and ended the year as the number one fastest-growing destination in the country for hotel performance.'
