ABI launches online guide to travel insurance

Holidaymakers who are unsure about some of the details regarding travel insurance can now consult a consumer guide launched by the Association of British Insurers (ABI).
The publication, which is available online, clarifies what is commonly covered by standard policies and what is often excluded.
Nick Starling, director of general insurance and health at the ABI, pointed out that UK residents spent more than £18bn travelling abroad last summer, but some people do not see travel insurance as an important part of their holiday budget.
'This guide points out what standard travel insurance policies will cover and why it is needed,' he added.
'Hopefully when consumers plan their next trip abroad this guide will help them choose the right policy.'
Noting that 15m Britons are expected to take a foreign holiday this year, the ABI advised consumers not to do anything overseas that they would not do at home and to disclose any medical conditions when arranging insurance.
The association also pointed out that the cheapest policies are not always the best as they can provide inadequate cover.
