People with a passion for aquatic activities might be interested in arranging a trip to Ibiza, which has been recognised as Europe's leading destination for diving, the local tourist board has revealed.

Xico Tarres, president of Ibiza Council, met with representatives from the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) to receive the award.

Particular recognition was reserved for the Punta Dive and Vellmari Europe centres, with the latter being praised for its innovation and wide range of online courses.

Ibiza is home to a total of 12 PADI-associated centres, which allow visitors to see the diverse animal and plant life found in the island's waters.

Popular diving destinations include the Posidonia seabed, which was added to the Unesco World Heritage list in 1999.

Holidaymakers can also embark on underwater adventures in Sa Pedrera, Ses Margalides and the islands of Es Vedranell and Isles Bledes.

Don Pedro, a merchant cargo ship that sunk not far from Ibiza's main port in 2007, has recently been opened up to recreational divers.
