Travellers across the globe will book one third of all journeys online by 2012, according to a report from industry research group PhoCusWright.

The study predicts that the number of leisure and unmanaged business trips reserved online will rise twice as fast as the rest of the market and reach a value of $313bn (£188.7bn) by next year.

Four major international regions were covered by the research, with the emerging areas of Latin America and Asia set to see more online travel bookings over the coming year.

Europe and America's combined share of the market is expected to decline to 73% in 2012.

'As online penetration growth in the more mature US and European travel markets slows, travel companies are looking to the Asia-Pacific and Latin America regions for the next pot of gold,' said Lorraine Sileo, vice president of research at PhoCusWright.

'In these emerging markets, macro-economic gains, increased travel and growing technology adoption will continue to fuel significant growth in online bookings.'

Overall, global travel bookings will rise by 6% this year and in 2012, according to the research.
