La Biennale returning to Venice

La Biennale returning to Venice
10 May 2011

There will be a fascinating world of culture and entertainment on offer in Venice over the coming months when the Biennale returns to the Italian city.

According to organisers, the event has been one of the world's most prestigious cultural institutions since its foundation at the end of the 19th century.

It promotes new artistic trends and is famous for its international film festival and art exhibition.

Culture vultures will be able to see work by 82 artists from around the world during the 54th International Art Exhibition, which will get underway on 4 June and continue until 27 November 2011.

Entitled ILLUMInations, the show is being directed by critic and historian Bice Curiger and will be based at the Arsenale and Giardini venues.

A galaxy of movie stars will descend upon Italy this summer for the 68th Venice Film Festival, which will run from 31 August to 10 September.

The event, which has been attended by the likes of Quentin Tarantino and Al Pacino in the past, features a competition that will be presided over by acclaimed director Darren Aronofsky this year.

Holidaymakers visiting Venice during the Biennale will also be able to attend events and see exhibitions celebrating theatre, dance, music and architecture.
