'Significant growth' in New York hotels outside Manhattan
17 May 2011
Demand for hotels throughout New York City has led to 'significant growth' for the hospitality sector outside the most famous borough of Manhattan, the local tourist board has revealed.
Since 2008, 42% of the new properties built in the city have been located outside Manhattan, with 22% being developed in Queens.
Brooklyn is home to 15% of the hotels built during the period, while the Bronx and Staten Island boast 3% and 2% respectively.
New York currently has the highest number of hotel rooms under construction in the US and is on track to add some 5,850 rooms in boroughs beyond Manhattan in a period of just over four years.
George Fertitta, chief executive of NYC & Company, said: 'Hotel development is an important part of attracting domestic and international visitors to New York City. The rise in development activity reflects the strong demand for accessible accommodation in all five boroughs.
'We encourage visitors to stay at properties in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island as a new way to experience New York City and take advantage of the affordable hotel options across the city.'
Last year, the destination welcomed some 48.7m visitors, marking a new record for the local tourism industry.
