Brits flock to Spain for spring breaks

Spain proved a highly popular spring getaway destination for Britons this year, official figures from the tourism ministry suggest.

The UK, Spain's primary tourism source market, sent some 1.15m travellers to the European country in April, 42% more than in the same month last year.

Germany was the second largest contributor, with 817,000 visitors, marking a year-on-year increase of 11%.

Overall, Spanish destinations welcomed a total of 4.7m foreign travellers last month, 21% more than in April 2010.

The figure means that total arrivals for the first four months of 2011 have increased by 8.5% to 13.8m, reports the AFP news agency.

A number of factors contributed to the strong demand for trips to Spain among Britons in April, including the consecutive bank holiday weekends at the end of the month created by Easter and the royal wedding.

Holidaymakers interested in visiting the country during the summer months can catch flights to numerous destinations, from Alicante, Malaga and Barcelona on the mainland to island favourites such as Mallorca and Tenerife.
