Hamburg has been described as a 'rising star' within Germany's tourism industry.

Klaus Lohmann, UK and Ireland director at the German National Tourist Office, revealed that the city is now one of the country's most popular destinations.

It features highly on a list of travel hotspots that is topped by the nation's most famous and culturally rich cities.

'On top of the list is Munich, followed by Berlin and then Frankfurt, Cologne and the rising star, Hamburg, which has been hugely underestimated,' said Mr Lohmann.

'Hamburg is a very green city, and it's vibrant too.'

The popularity of Munich means that Bavaria is the leading region, with 21% of all British travellers visiting this part of Germany, Mr Lohmann revealed.

According to recent figures from the country's official statistics office, overnight stays by holidaymakers reached a record high of 60.3m last year.

Visitors from other European countries accounted for some 76% of all foreign travellers staying in Germany.
