Travellers considering a trip to Egypt have been reassured that the country's holiday destinations are operating as normal and ready to receive visitors.

UN World Tourism Organisation secretary general Taleb Rifai recently visited Egypt and met with the prime minister, Essam Sharaf, to underline the importance of inbound travel as a contributor to the nation's economic recovery.

Mr Sharaf described tourism as a 'critical' part of the Egyptian economy, while government minister Mounir Fakhri Abdel-Nour revealed that international guests are beginning to return to the country.

Praising the political support shown for the industry, Mr Rifai said: 'Tourism is clearly seen as a national priority involving all areas of public policy and thus can be a major contributor to consolidate the transition.

'Moreover, throughout my visit it has been very clear that the Egyptian tourism sector is fully operational and ready to receive visitors.'

Experiences on offer to holidaymakers in the country include seeing the famous pyramids and going scuba diving in Sharm el Sheikh.
