Hong Kong has been described as 'an intoxicating place' by a travel writer and local resident.

Piera Chen is the author of Lonely Planet's new Hong Kong Encounter guide, which highlights some of the city's unique features and experiences.

Readers can discover some of the destination's secrets as revealed by local experts, such as Caprice chef Sherman Chan's favourite restaurants and architect Carlos Marreiros's pick of the most striking buildings in Macau.

Due to be published this month, the new guide also recommends the best neighbourhoods, sights, shops and entertainment venues in Hong Kong, as well as highlights that every visitor should see.

Ms Chen said: 'It's an intoxicating place - spectacular, exotic and accessible.

'If you're visiting for business, you'll find pleasure sneaks up on you. If you're visiting for pleasure, there's no shortage of locals who make it their business to please.'

Last month, Lonely Planet launched a new series of Discover guides covering France, Spain, Canada and Scotland.
