Travellers planning a trip to Verona will have the opportunity to visit some of northern Italy's most popular locations, some of which have been recommended by the national tourism agency.

Stefania Gatta, a spokeswoman for the Italian State Tourist Board, said that Verona is a 'wonderful city in its own right', but also serves as the gateway to Lake Garda, the Dolomites and historic towns such as Padua and Mantua.

Ms Gatta described Lake Garda as 'magnificent' and offered some recommendations for people visiting the destination.

'Visit the medieval Della Scala fortress [and] the Roman remains of the famous Latin poet Catullo's villa, stroll along the waterfront and have a drink or a meal in one of the many bars and restaurants,' she said.

The spokeswoman also singled out attractions such as St Anthony's Basilica in Padua and Palazzo Ducale in Mantua.

EasyJet launched a new route from London Gatwick to Verona last week, providing daily flights to the Italian city.
