Culture vultures enjoying city breaks in New York later this year can visit the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) to see an exhibition celebrating one of the most prolific and significant artists of the 20th century.

De Kooning: A Retrospective will run from 18 September 2011 to 9 January next year.

It is reportedly the first major museum display covering the full scope of Willem de Kooning's career, from his earliest works in Holland, before he moved to the US in 1926, to the abstract paintings he created in the 1980s.

The show will also be the first to occupy the entire sixth-floor gallery space at the New York museum - an area of about 17,000 square feet.

More than 200 works from public and private collections will be presented, including famous paintings such as Pink Angels and Excavation.

Also coming to the MoMA this year is an exhibition of key works by Mexican painter Diego Rivera, which will open on 13 November.
