Beijing to launch high-speed rail link to Shanghai

Beijing to launch high-speed rail link to Shanghai
16 Jun 2011

The Chinese cities of Beijing and Shanghai are due to be linked up later this month by a new high-speed train line, which will be as fast as a plane and much cheaper.

British tourists looking to explore these historic cities will be able to travel between them by rail at speeds of up to 300 kmph (180 mph).

The overall journey is estimated to take just four hours and 45 minutes, and 90 daily services are expected to carry more than 1,000 passengers each.

By comparison, flights from Beijing to Shanghai run 50 times per day and while the air-time journey is shorter, boarding times and the potential for weather-related disruption mean that the train is likely to be quicker overall, the China Guide claims.

Business class and first class train passengers can travel in comfort on-board the new service, which is due to commence in late June, while those travelling in second class will get a much more cost-effective alternative to flying.
