The UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) has revealed that France remained the world's most popular travel destination in terms of international arrivals last year.

Some 76.8m people travelled to the country in 2010, the same number as in 2009.

In its latest Tourism Highlights report, the UNWTO revealed that international visitor numbers in the US increased by 8.7% last year, making it the second most popular destination.

The most significant development in the top ten was the rise of China, with the Asian country overtaking Spain to claim third place in the ranking after welcoming 55.7m foreign guests.

Italy also made it into the top five, while the UK, Turkey, Germany, Malaysia and Mexico completed the top ten.

Half (51%) of the 480m international visitor arrivals recorded in 2010 were for leisure and recreation, while 27% travelled for other reasons, such as visiting friends and relatives or religious purposes.

Flights remain the main method of reaching overseas locations, with 51% of travellers getting to their destination by air last year.
