People with a passion for unusual events can book hotels on England's south coast this summer to take in the sight of competition entrants attempting to take to the air in human-powered flying machines.

The Worthing Birdman contest will return on 13 and 14 August, bringing an array of weird and wonderful participants and contraptions with it.

All sorts of people take part in the event, from those hoping to raise as much money as possible for charity, to wannabe inventors who think that their creations can win them the distance prize.

A cash reward of £10,000 is on offer for the furthest flight, should any of the hopefuls manage to travel for more than 100 metres.

In the past, the competition has been graced by Wonder Woman, Donald Duck, flying squirrels, sugar plum fairies, penguins, vampires and many more bizarre characters.

As well as taking in the spectacle of Worthing Birdman 2011, holidaymakers staying in hotels on England's south coast can visit the scenic South Downs or take a trip to Brighton.
