Travellers who take the opportunity to visit Malaga during trips to southern Spain will discover a 'real treasure', according to the local tourist board.

Antonio Montejo Romero, a spokesman for the Malaga City Tourist Board and Convention Bureau, pointed out that many people simply use the local airport as a gateway to the resorts of the Costa del Sol, missing out on the destination's sights and attractions.

The area has a rich history, with landmarks including castles and cathedrals dating back thousands of years.

'We're talking about our wonderful momentous heritage from [the] Romans, the Catholic kings and the Jewish times,' said Mr Montejo Romero.

'We have a Roman amphitheatre for example which dates [back to] the first century before Christ, which is completely restored.'

Visitors can also look out for the Alcazaba fortress and the cathedral that is located in the centre of the city.

Art lovers can pay a visit to a museum celebrating the life and work of Pablo Picasso, who was born in Malaga.
