Munich celebrates anniversary of Ludwig II

People taking Munich city breaks in 2011 will be treated to a number of special events and activities that are being held in honour of King Ludwig II.
This year is the 125th anniversary of the death of the royal, who is popularly known as the fairytale king or the Swan King.
According to the Bavarian State Opera, there are some very 'crazy stories' about the monarch, who reigned between 1864 and 1886.
'He had a very strong relationship with Richard Wagner, the composer, and the king loved to have private shows, so he filled the whole national theatre with soldiers - around 2,000 - and they had to look only to the stage, they were not allowed to turn to see the king,' revealed Anna Kleeblatt, a spokeswoman for the opera house.
'They had to sit there for five hours during this whole private opera show only for the king.'
Ms Kleeblatt also recommended a visit to nearby Neuschwanstein Castle, which is hosting a number of concerts and special dinners over the course of the year.
