Travel expert advises diesel cars for hire when on holiday

Expert advises diesel car hire
6 Jul 2011

Travel expert and Telegraph columnist Nick Trend has warned holidaymakers who are thinking of hiring a car abroad to choose a diesel, as it is the most cost-effective option.

He explained that doing so will save tourists money on fuel, if the cost of hiring a diesel is not 'significantly more expensive' than a petrol powered car.

Mr Trend said: 'This is now true of many European countries including Spain (111p per litre compared with 117p for petrol), Portugal (118p/137p), Italy (124p/135p) and Greece (128p/146p).'

Parents with youngsters who are considering getting a hire car should bring their own safety seat with them as companies charge extra for them, he advised.

Travellers are warned not to make the mistake of paying for additional luggage charges as a result of the extra weight.

Booster seats which convert to rucksacks are one answer to the problem, he said.

In another recent article for the Telegraph Mr Trend suggested that holidaymakers make use of small regional airports which, he said, have less expensive parking and fewer queues.
