Figures show increase in passenger numbers

Increase in passengers flying to Europe
6 Jul 2011

Statistics suggest that people are continuing to take holidays abroad as latest figures from the Airports Council International (ACI) show that passenger numbers increased during the month of May.

ACI states that there was an overall increase of 6.6% in the number of passengers taking flights.

Andreas Schimm, world economics director at ACI, said: 'We are encouraged by the continuing strong growth trend in passenger traffic.'

There was 'significant growth', the ACI said, of people flying to Turkey, Spain, Russia and Northern Europe, which saw passenger numbers increase by 8%.

Africa was the only exception with numbers down by 16.5%, which ACI suggested could be as a result of recent unrest in the area.

The highest increase was in international passenger traffic in Asia-Pacific, which had increased by 9.8%.

According to the ACI, passenger traffic is showing a general upward trend as it recently reported that April has seen what it described as a 'vigorous increase in international traffic in Europe' of 11%.
