Parents taking their children on beach holidays this summer should perhaps budget for beach extras as well as flights, accommodation and food.

According to a new survey by Post Office Travel Money, mums and dads spend around £80 per child on unplanned seaside treats.

These include buckets and spades, ice creams and pedalo hire, which are often purchased after giving into children's 'pester power'.

Indeed, just 13% of parents surveyed said they had been able to resist demands for treats like ice lollies and inflatable beach toys from their kids.

Post Office Travel Money spokeswoman Sarah Munro said: 'Paying out extra for kids' 'must haves' could bust the holiday budget, so the clear message must be to pack the suitcase carefully.'

The survey also revealed that the cost of beach extras is cheapest in Bulgaria, while the Vendee region of France is the most expensive destination.
