Buenos Aires visitors urged to try local drink

Holidaymakers visiting Buenos Aires during a trip to Argentina should not miss the opportunity to try a drink known locally as 'mate', according to Lonely Planet.

Spokeswoman Heather Carswell said that many people see the city as the home of tango and are aware of its good food, but few are familiar with mate, a bitter tea that is highly popular among locals.

She offered some advice for people planning to try the beverage, which is prepared and consumed in a certain way.

'Preparing mate is a ritual in itself and there is an informal etiquette to drinking it,' said Ms Carswell.

'The way to drink mate is to put it in the container, cover it with your hand and shake it a couple of times, pour very hot water in it and let it simmer for 30 seconds. It is drunk through a silver straw - called a "bombilla".'

According to a recent report released by the UN World Tourism Organisation, visitor arrivals in South America increased by 11% year-on-year in 2010.

Argentina was the region's star performer, with a 23% rise in the number of people travelling to the country.
