22 Jul 2011
Travellers visiting Washington DC this year will have a rare opportunity to see Shadows, a piece created by Andy Warhol in the last decade of his life.
The work will go on display at the Hirshhorn Museum from 25 September to 15 January 2012.
It comprises 102 silkscreened and hand-painted canvases, featuring distorted images of shadows that were generated in Warhol's studios.
The paintings are placed edge to edge, creating an uninterrupted series that stretches for almost 450 feet.
It will be presented in the Hirshhorn Museum's curved galleries to emphasise the cinematic quality of the work.
The venue is part of the Smithsonian complex, which comprises 19 museums and galleries, nine research facilities and the National Zoological Park.
Also set to open this year is an exhibition of artefacts and artworks providing an insight into the life of Gertrude Stein, which will be launched at the Portrait Gallery on 14 October.
