International visitor numbers have reached a record high in Las Vegas, the city's tourism authority has revealed.

Data taken primarily from the US government's commerce department indicates that foreigners now account for 18% of all visitation to Las Vegas and 27% of tourism revenue.

In 2010, arrivals from overseas countries increased by 40% year-on-year, with a number of source markets experiencing double-digit growth in travel to the destination.

Rossi Ralenkotter, president and chief executive of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, said the city aims to increase the international share of the local tourism industry to 30% over the next decade.

'The international demand for Las Vegas demonstrates the global reach of our brand,' he added.

'Additionally, working with McCarran [airport] … we continue to create more accessibility for the international traveller by securing more non-stop flights from key countries.'

A new terminal will be added to McCarran in 2012, boosting its capacity to host international flights.
