National Museum of Scotland has grand reopening
29 Jul 2011

Edinburgh visitors can now explore the new National Museum of Scotland, with the attraction reopening today (29 July) following a major refurbishment costing more than £47m.

Some special events were arranged this morning to celebrate the reopening, with Chambers Street being brought to life with music, dancing and an appearance by an animatronic dinosaur.

The museum has been redesigned with the aim of exploring various aspects of history, culture and life on Earth, from the natural world to science and technology.

In the Grand Gallery, visitors can see a selection of large items that highlight Scotland's contribution to the world and illustrate the diversity of the collections.

Window on the World, the largest single museum installation in the UK, features 850 exhibits including the jaws of a sperm whale and gold-inlaid armour from Iran, while the Art and Design area explores topics such as life and death in ancient Egypt and the development of sculpture over the centuries.

Among the National Museum's first exhibitions is 26 Treasures, which features a selection of items from the institution's Scotland galleries and short responses to the objects from 26 different writers.
