Visitors urged to see Lisbon's lesser-known sights

Travellers visiting Lisbon have been encouraged to seek out some of the city's lesser-known sights and experiences.

The local tourist board recommended attractions such as the Nucleo Arqueologico, which it described as a 'truly eclectic' museum.

Located underneath the streets of the Baixa area, the institution is home to exhibits including Roman fish tanks, Moorish ceramics and a fifth-century Christian burial site.

Another activity recommended for Lisbon visitors is joining locals to enjoy the tradition of watching the ferries go between the Estacao Fluvial and Barreiro on the other side of the Tejo river in the hours before sunset.

History enthusiasts can head to the Sao Vicente de Fora church, which dates back to the 16th century and is home to a number of tombs, including that of Catherine de Braganca, the widow of King Charles II of England.

Holidaymakers looking for a memorable way to get around the city can ride on tram number 28, which follows a route from the seafront up some of the steepest hills in Lisbon, affording panoramic views from a lofty point near the church of St George.
