Dublin to host major contemporary art exhibition
8 Aug 2011

Art enthusiasts will be travelling to Dublin this year to be part of a major event in the city.

Dublin Contemporary, which is described as 'one of the most ambitious art exhibitions ever staged in Ireland', will run from 6 September to 31 October 2011.

It will present work by more than 90 local, national and international artists at various venues in the Irish capital, including Iveagh Gardens, the National Gallery of Ireland, the Royal Hibernian Academy and Earlsfort Terrace.

Curated by New York-based writer Christian Viveros-Faune and Franco-Peruvian artist Jota Castro, the show will investigate some of the latest developments in modern art through the work of figures such as Willie Doherty, Dexter Dalwood, Jim Lambie, Thomas Hirschhorn and Teresa Margolles.

The exhibition has the subtitle Terrible Beauty - Art, Crisis, Change and the Office of Non-Compliance, which is taken from William Butler Yeats' poem Easter, 1916.

Jimmy Deenihan, Ireland's minister for arts and heritage, said: 'This autumn, Dublin Contemporary 2011 will greatly enhance Ireland's reputation as an important cultural destination and will attract a large international and domestic audience.

'Ireland needs the arts to lead the way in innovative thinking and Dublin Contemporary 2011 is to the forefront in this area.'
