Belgium may be best known for city break destinations like Brussels and Bruges, but there is much more for travellers to discover across the country, according to the national tourist board.

According to Franchoise Scheepers, UK and Ireland director of the Belgian Tourist Office - Brussels and Wallonia, an increasing number of people are discovering the 'full potential' of the country.

She noted that visitors can explore local history, enjoy a relaxed style of life and take in some of the attractions on offer in the southern region of Wallonia, which she described as 'accessible and affordable'.

'Wallonia offers … a whole range of activities in an unspoilt setting, from motor racing on the … F1 racetrack to beautiful golf courses," added Ms Scheepers.

"For those who are in the know, the south of Belgium is the place to go."

According to recent figures from STR Global, the opening of the MAS museum in Antwerp was among the factors that supported growth in Belgium's hotel market in the first half of 2011.
