19 Aug 2011
Music fans who like the idea of combining a festival with a holiday can head to Iceland this year to check out an event described as "one of the premier annual showcases for new music".
Iceland Airwaves will come to Reykjavik from 12 to 16 October 2011.
Sponsored by Icelandair, the festival has grown in stature since it was first held in 1999, with Rolling Stone magazine calling it 'the hippest long weekend on the annual music festival calendar'.
A host of bands and artists who have experienced great critical acclaim and success have played at Airwaves in previous years, including Florence and the Machine, Klaxons, Bloc Party, Fatboy Slim and Hot Chip.
Once the performances by the live bands have finished, DJs take over to provide the soundtrack as revellers continue partying until the early hours.
Acts confirmed for the 2011 edition of the festival include Beach House and Tune-Yards from the US, Anglo-Japanese trio Nedry and Icelandic groups Lay Low, Sykur and Of Monsters and Men.
Concerts and events take place at venues such as Harpa, Faktory and Cafe Amsterdam in Reykjavik, which is accessible from the UK with Icelandair.
